After 42 successful years at Boone Karlberg, William L. Crowley "Bill" has begun a well-deserved retirement from law. Bill has contibuted to the success of Boone Karlberg over the past four decades by achieving excellent results for his clients, spending countless hours mentoring other lawyers within and outside the firm and is always prepared to add levity to any situation with his quick wit and hilarious humor.
Throughout his career, Bill has worked on and contributed to over 200 published cases in Montana and within the NInth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has tried cases in State and Federal Courthouses around Montana and handled numerous appeals to the Montana Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit. Despite his humility, he made a name for himself being an expert in complicated municipal liability and federal civil rights cases. He is known for his quiet professionalism and has been a champion for civility in the law.
Bill has been recognized for his legal excellence in publications such as Best Lawyers in America, Mountain States Super Lawyers, and the Benchmark Litigation Guide, "America's Leading Litigation Firms and Attorneys." He has earned an "AV Preeminent" rating by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. He has also contributed to his community by serving on boards for the Poverello Center, Montana Eye Bank, and participated in the Citzens' Law Enforcement Academy.
In addition to his litigation practice, Bill is an exception "grandpa" to five grandchildren and a proud father to four children. While we will miss seeing Bill on a regular basis, we are very excited for Bill to get to enjoy more time with his beloved children and grandchildren. We wish Bill well in all his future endeavors and would like to heartily congratulate him on a full and successful legal career.
Natasha P. Jones been recognized for her professionalism and trial skills as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), one of the premier invitation-only groups of trial lawyers and judges. Membership requires at least 10 jury trials to verdict, plus demonstrated legal knowledge, professionalism, and high personal character and honorable reputation.
Of the 3,000 lawyers in Montana, precisely 44 (less than 2%) are members of ABOTA, and just 3 are women. There is an even smaller number of Montana lawyers—11, by our count—who, like Tasha, are now part of both ABOTA and the International Society of Barristers. Tasha is the only woman in Montana to hold that honor.
This a tremendous and well-deserved recognition for Tasha and Boone Karlberg. Congratulations!
Boone Karlberg P.C. extends our congratulations to Natasha P. Jones on her well deserved admittance to membership in the International Society of Barristers (ISOB). Membership is extended to advocates of exceptional talent whose qualities – including integrity, honor, and collegiality – embody the spirit of the true legal professional.
Membership is extended by invitation and only after a thorough and rigorous screening process that considers the lawyer’s abilities, experience, accomplishments, and ethical standards as assessed by trial lawyers and judges in the jurisdiction in which the lawyer practices. The Society nurtures excellent and professionalism advocacy by its recognition of members’ achievements. There are less than 20 Montana lawyers admitted as members of ISOB including recognized leaders of the profession such as Hon. Dana L. Christensen, Jim Goetz and Mikel Moore. As Fellows of the Society, members are committed to the highest ethical standards and to civility in their personal and professional relationships. The Society has Fellows from every State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Australia, Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland.
The Society was conceived to bring together the best of the trial bar in a setting devoid of partisan interests, whether political or across a plaintiff/defendant divide. Meetings provide an opportunity to consider issues of ethics and excellence in advocacy as well as the crucial role of litigation and the rule of law in a democratic society.
ISOB members are committed to safeguarding the right to trial by jury, improving advocacy skills, recognizing the rights of citizens in the judicial process. Tasha has done that in a multitude of ways, including teaching trial advocacy at the Advanced Trial Advocacy program, her involvement with law school education and her devotion to the continued improvement of the annual Bench-Bar CLE.
Tasha will be formally inducted into ISOB at the March meeting of the Society in Barcelona, Spain, in March, 2023.

A Missoula jury unanimously determined Boone Karlberg's client was not liable for a woman's slip-and-fall injuries at a commercial property. The plaintiff slipped in the parking lot of a Missoula shopping center on Christmas Eve of 2016. She alleged the property manager failed to keep the lot clear of ice, and sought compensation for multiple hip surgeries, a head injury, and loss of income. On behalf of the property manager, attorneys Scott Stearns and Zach Franz presented eyewitness testimony, historical weather data, and photos of the parking lot from the day of the incident. At the conclusion of a three-day trial in April 2022, the jury voted 12-0 in favor of the defendant. We are pleased with the outcome and proud of another favorable result for a Boone Karlberg client.
After 40 successful years with Boone Karlberg and serving the community, Randy Cox will begin a well-deserved retirement from the active practice of law. He also handled numerous plaintiff cases, particularly commercial disputes. Randy has briefed and argued dozens of cases in the Montana Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and has tried dozens of cases in federal and state courthouses across Montana.
In addition to a busy litigation practice, Randy held membership and leadership positions with numerous legal organizations, including invitation-only memberships in the American Board of Trial Advocates, International Society of Barristers and the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. Randy served on the Supreme Court Advisory Commission on Rules of Civil and Appellate Procedure and was heavily involved in the last major revision of those rules. Randy also served 25 years, including 12 as chair, of the Montana Board of Bar Examiners. Randy has been an adjunct professor at the University of Montana Law School, has guest lectured on trial practice topics, coached several competition trial teams and taught at the Advanced Trial Advocacy School for several years. He has given presentations, including trial skills demonstrations, at more than 75 continuing legal education programs across Montana, the United States and Canada, including roles as trial counsel in ABOTA-sponsored Masters in Trial programs.
Along with his wife, Theresa, Randy has been a long-time supporter of Missoula community projects, including A Carousel for Missoula, Dragon Hollow Play Area, Watson Children’s Center, Missoula Food Bank, YMCA, First United Methodist Church and a number of other necessary and worthwhile projects. Randy and Theresa are devoted to Missoula-based philanthropy focused on feeding and educating children who cannot otherwise afford to be fed and educated. Randy and Theresa are devoted to their three children (Jason, Jessica and Jamie) and to their grandchildren (who live in Missoula!!), Pierce, Everett and Alanna.
We will miss working with Randy on a daily basis. In addition to his extensive knowledge of the law, Randy has imparted to his partners and students his enthusiasm for providing mentoring and skills development, affectionately earning the informal title “Trial Dad.” We wish Randy well in all his future endeavors and would like to heartily congratulate him on a full and successful career.
After 34 years of serving in the legal field and 23 years of partnership with Boone Karlberg P.C., Ross Tillman is retiring from the practice of law.
