MATTHEW B. HAYHURST is a litigation attorney whose primary
areas of practice include personal injury litigation, product
liability, commercial litigation, insurance law, railroad
litigation and
general negligence cases. He has handled appeals to the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Montana Supreme
Court and the Washington Supreme Court. Matt is a member of the
State Bars of Montana and Washington, and he is admitted to
practice in the Ninth Circuit and the federal district courts in
Montana, the Western District of Washington and the Eastern
District of Washington.
Matt was raised in Helena, Montana. He attended the University
of Montana, where he received a Bachelor’s degree with high
honors in mathematics. He earned his law degree, graduating
first in his class, from the University of Montana School of
Law. Matt served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Montana Law Review
and authored Parental Notification of Abortion and Minors’
Rights Under the Montana Constitution, 58 Mont. L. Rev. 565
(1997).
Matt served as a law clerk to Judge James Browning on the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1998 to 1999. He
then joined the Seattle law firm of Perkins Coie, where his
practice focused on product liability, aviation law and complex
litigation. He co-authored the Washington chapter of a treatise
on product liability law entitled Product Liability Desk
Reference - A Fifty-State Compendium (2000 to 2002 editions).
After three years at Perkins Coie, Matt accepted a position at
Boone Karlberg, and he and his wife, Lisa, returned to their
home state of Montana.
Matt has been recognized as an "up-and-coming litigator" by
Chambers and Partners. He has also been recognized in the
Benchmark Litigation Guide, which named Boone Karlberg in its
top-rated category of "highly recommended" litigation firms in
Montana. Matt is a shareholder at Boone Karlberg.
Matt is committed to community service work. He has provided
more than 100 hours of pro bono legal assistance every year
since earning his law degree. He is also the past President of the Board
of Directors for Missoula Youth Homes, a local nonprofit
organization dedicated to caring for children whose families are
in crisis.
Matt enjoys spending time with his wife, Lisa, and
their sons, Elliott and Charlie. He also enjoys cycling, fly fishing,
scuba diving and mountaineering. He has climbed the highest
peaks in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, California and Washington.
